N2 - Summary. Palliative care is increasingly becoming involved in the care of people with progressive neurological disease, allowing a full assessment of the physical, psycho-social and spiritual issues facing patients and their families. There is increasing evidence for the effectiveness of palliative care in advancing disease and there are now studies showing that specialist palliative care interventions are helpful in improving symptoms and quality of life and in supporting both patient and family. Moreover, this appears to be safe, with no increased mortality or adverse effects. Differing models of the provision of palliative care have been suggested and there is evidence that early involvement with a wider multidisciplinary approach may be more effective.
